KONA AGGRESSOR, HAWAII: Frequently Asked Questions

Where exactly is Kona?
Kona, better known as Kailua-Kona, is on the "Big Island" of Hawaii, the largest of the Hawaiian chain.

What is included in the Kona live-aboard charter?
Accommodations aboard the vessel, diving, compressed air tanks, weights & weight belts, airport transfers on day of arrival and departure, meals & snacks, non-alcoholic & local alcoholic beverages are include in the charter rate.

How many days is the Kona live-aboard charter & how many dives can I make?
The Kona Aggressor II scuba charter is seven days, Saturday afternoon to Saturday morning, with five & one-half days of diving. Most guests make up to 5 dives a day. Diving begins on Sunday morning and ends about midday on Friday when we return to the dock.

When should I arrive in Kona for my Kona live-aboard vacation?
You should plan to arrive in Kona on the day of your charter, Saturday.

Are there any taxes or fees not included in the Kona live-aboard charter price?
Only a nominal USDT tariff, normally $35 per client.

Do I need a passport?
Hawaii is part of the United States, therefore, U.S. citizens are not required to have a passport. Non-U.S. citizens should check with the appropriate consulate.

How do I meet the Kona Aggressor II on the day of departure?
If you arrive in Kona on the day of your charter, you will be met at the Keahole Airport by a uniformed crew member & taken to the boat. If you are already in the Kona area, you will need to make your way to the boat anytime after 2:00 p.m.

Where does the Kona Aggressor II dock, where all the Kona live-aboards go?
The Kona Aggressor II docks in Kailua-Kona Bay near King Kamehameha's Kona Beach Hotel.

What is special about the diving on the Kona Coast?
Everyone has at least heard of the magnificent whales, but Kona's macro-photography is unbelievable: shark nose blennies, harlequin shrimp, frogfish, lionfish & many other wonderful creatures. The tropical fish species in the Pacific are a great deal different from those most divers are accustomed to seeing in the Caribbean. Many species are endemic to Hawaii, making it a special place for fish-watchers. Manta Ray Village is one of Kona's most famous night diving spots. Several large mantas, with "wing" spans of 8 - 16 feet, tumble & barrel roll through the water right in front of the divers.

What is the water temperature? Will I need a wet suit?
The water temperature varies from about 74F to 80F. We suggest that all divers have a wet suit. During the summer months, a thin 3mm (1/8 inch) suit is sufficient, but during the slightly cooler winter months, a 5mm (1/4 inch) suit is recommended. A hood or hooded vest is very helpful if you have a tendency to get chilled. The visibility ranges from 75 to 125 feet.

What is the best time of year for diving off Kona live-aboards?
Diving is superb year-round. Several species of whales are present during the winter months, however, the seas can be a little rough. While Hawaii does not have an actual rainy season, average rainfall is slightly higher between February & April.

What type of topography can I expect to see in Hawaii?
The Kona coast has many different bays, coves, lagoons, lava flows, black sand, white sand & green sand beaches & dramatic cliffs plus unique lava formations.

Is there dinghy diving off this Kona live-aboard?
No, most of the diving is done directly from the dive platform of the Kona Aggressor II.

Is there night diving, as well, off this fine Kona live-aboard?
Absolutely. The night diving is terrific.  Divemasters reserve the right to nix night dives if weather or currents are not safe for clients.

What is planned for Friday afternoon & evening after we return to port?
This is your opportunity to shop or sight-see in Kona. The Kona Aggressor II crew hosts a cocktail party Friday evening. Dinner is not served on board. The crew can recommend a local restaurant and/or luau & arrange transportation. This meal is not included in the charter price.

When is check-out time on this yacht, the Queen of Kona live-aboards?
Check-out is between 7:00 & 8:00 a.m. on Saturday morning.

Where is the nearest recompression chamber since this Kona live-aboard do not maintain such chambers actually on board the yacht ?
The nearest recompression is in Honolulu on the island of Oahu.
