Since then we have been delighted to serve more than 24,000 clients around the world, connecting them to dive resorts, beach hotels, diving live-aboards & tropical islands across the South Pacific, Caribbean, Latin America, Asia & Australia.
"GOT A DREAM? LET'S MAKE IT HAPPEN !" ™
We are contract partners & stateside reps for the world's top live-aboard diving yachts, including the industry leaders -- the AGGRESSOR FLEET & the EXPLORER VENTURES FLEET. USDT also represents most of the premier independent liveaboards worldwide, including Truk Odyssey, the Bilikiki & Spirit of the Solomons in the Solomon Islands, the Nai'a in Fiji, the Ocean Hunter I & Ocean Hunter III in Palau, Mike Ball's Spoilsport in Australia, & the Sea Hunter & Undersea Hunter at Cocos Island, Costa Rica.
USDT NETWORK represents scores of first-rate scuba diving resorts, as well as exotic little off-the-beaten-path gems -- most of which work as both dive resorts & snorkeling vacation getaways. Our richly colorful website for the U.S. Dive Travel Network now offers you easy access to hundreds of helpful files -- more than 777,000 words + 3,000 copyrighted photos -- a virtual encyclopedia of accurate info for planning superb tropical vacations anywhere your imagination can take you.
Our dive vacation planners cater to customers who place high value on reef preservation & treading lightly with native cultures. That's why we rep only top-echelon dive resorts & live-aboards that have proven their respect for vulnerable ocean eco-systems -- by making life-positive choices to protect corals & critters -- before cash flow.
"The WORLD'S YOUR OYSTER; & LIVE-ABOARDS.COM is the SPOON !" ™

Our goal as your travel planners & advocates is continually to refine our customer service, research efficiency & vacation package details to the utmost degree. Also we plan, for many more years, to explore & develop new dive resort destinations & add new luxury live-aboards -- throughout the Pacific & Caribbean sectors.
The tropical learning curve never sags. It just keeps on climbing, year after year, as we create elegant client-centered solutions for daily challenges -- from reefs stressed by global warming & cruise ships, to currency flux that bashes the U.S. dollar, to airline pricing games.
Life near the sea & under the sea is good beyond measure. This big blue planet is alive & thriving! After more than 45 in-depth inspection tours of tropical island groups around the world, we speak from direct experience & deep delight in the ocean realms.
Hope we can share that island excitement with you, too. We believe that, with a little time & TLC, tropical adventure vacations can be planned & refined via one easy premise --

ABOUT our FOUNDERS: the HESSBURG FAMILY
U.S. Dive Travel founder JOHN HESSBURG is a certified PADI divemaster & alpine mountaineering guide, trained in mountain & ocean rescue. He loves the sea as much as life itself & has several thousand dives under his belt -- across the Mid-Pacific, South Pacific, Caribbean & Arabian Sea. John is fluent in Spanish & Brazilian Portuguese, & conversant in German. A native of St. Paul, Minnesota, John moved to Seattle in 1982, then back to St. Paul in June 1999. While working in Seattle, he fell in love with islands of the South Pacific & founded Wild Island Expeditions in 1990. Later that guide service grew into the present-day U.S. Dive Travel by March of 1991. The partners of USDT Network first acquired LIVE-ABOARDS.COM in the spring of 2008 & launched this new edition in 2014.
John Hessburg has led numerous tropical dive tours, scuba diving expeditions & land-based expeditions in more than 30 countries for more than 35 years. These include pioneering expeditions to unexplored reefs & seamounts across the island groups of Tonga, New Caledonia & Fiji in the South Pacific. He has visited all islands in the main Hawaiian Chain many times, & led more than 40 dive trips to various Hawaiian isles since 1990. John also has led climbing & trekking trips to the Andes Mountains of Bolivia & Argentina, plus countless climbs & hikes in the U.S. Rockies, the Canadian Coastal Range, the North Cascades & Mexico.
In May & June of 1989, John led the U.S. Mountaineering Expedition to La Cordillera Real' in the Bolivian Andes, exploring 3 virgin valley systems on the eastern flanks of the Royal Range. There his team photographed, charted & gave names to the glaciers, rock faces, buttresses, ridges & summits in remote sectors of the Andes that no non-indigenous explorers ever had visited before. This "Climbing in Real Time Expedition" secured first ascents of 3 challenging ice routes, which were highlighted both at the 1990 American Alpine Club convention, & in the 1990 AAC mountaineering journal -- the sport's primary international archive.
Highlight of this successful expedition, backed by REI of Seattle, was first ascent of the tough-to-reach NE Ridge of Mount Chachacomani, (19,902 ft.) one of the most elusive unclimbed routes left among major peaks of the Central Andes. This breath-taking knife-edge ice summit was reached by John + 4 teammates in May 1989. Views from this summit -- nearly 120 miles in all directions -- ranged from LaPaz all the way north to Lake Titicaca in Peru, to SW headwaters of the Amazon River in northern Bolivia. The team earned two other summits on that massive Chachacomani-Chearoco Massif over the course of 6 weeks of explorations above 14,000 feet.
John has guided many adventure tours for USDT Network throughout the Americas & the Pacific Rim. In addition to normal contract duties, he's led 7 dive trips to the South Pacific, one extended visit to the Arabian Peninsula, many to Mexico & the Western Caribbean, several trekking & photo trips throughout South America, two 100+mile whitewater & voyageur canoe treks in the wilderness of Ontario, two long-distance bike tours of Canada & California, plus countless scores of rock & ice climbs in the Colorado & Canadian Rockies & the Cascades. John also has completed 19 cross-country ski marathons (50-55 kilometers) & 2 triathlons back in MN & WI since 1977.

JOHN HESSBURG has a BA degree in journalism, summa cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa, from the U of M (Mpls MN) & previously worked 15 years as a news-feature writer & investigative reporter. He also served as a Pacific Northwest correspondent for Reuters, the British international news agency, during his 9 years as a senior staff writer at the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, morning daily newspaper in the Emerald City. The old office joke used to be that the Seattle P-I's famous globe -- a 40-foot-tall revolving steel facsimile of the Earth -- is maybe the real "Daily Planet" of SuperMan graphic novel fame.
For 5 years in the late 1980s & early 1990s, John freelanced as Associate Editor of America's oldest mountaineering magazine, "Summit" & was a regular contributor to these national magazines: "Climbing" & "Rock & Ice." He published 2 cover stories in "Pacific Northwest Magazine" & one cover piece in "The Mountaineers Magazine" during the early 1990s. All in all, John wrote more than 2,000 bylined stories during 15 years as a journalist in MN & WA states.
In the 1980s, John Hessburg was twice nominated for a Pulitzer Prize, one time solo for a feature piece about America's Vietnam years, & once as member of a team analyzing a Mt. Hood climbing tragedy that claimed several young students. John won a dozen state & regional reporting awards in Minnesota & Washington, including Minnesota's highest honors for investigative journalism -- the Frank Premack Award for Investigative Journalism in 1981, & the Minneapolis Tribune Government News Contest (for investigative reporting) in 1980 & 1981.
One series of 25 stories in the Seattle morning newspaper, published in the late 1980s, exposed rampant timber theft on U.S. Forest Service lands in Washington, Oregon & Alaska, which for decades had cost American taxpayers millions of dollars a year. Prodded by those stories, & public outcry over Forest Service malfeasance, Congress passed strict new laws regulating timber sale accountability. Now logging in America's national forests falls under tighter law enforcement scrutiny, to protect vulnerable public resources from a corrupt old-boys network of timber pirates that used to prey at will on the Pacific Northwest.

A native of windward Oahu in Hawaii, SUSAN HESSBURG is our Office Admin. She is a PADI-certified diver, who has made many adventure trips back to the Hawaiian Islands since 1990. Susan Hessburg has dived with John across Puget Sound in WA state, in Hawaii, in the Cook Islands; & she also has conducted extensive visits to the Fiji Islands, Japan & Mexico.
She has climbed three of the tallest glaciated peaks in the Cascade Range plus a number of smaller ones. While keeping the company books & reservations system on track, Susan has been a "power mom" of the first water, chipping in countless hours each month of volunteer work for high school band & theater booster clubs. Flexible, intuitive, trained in design & fine-art photography, Susan Hessburg is a wizard in marketing & social media as well.
SUSAN HESSBURG has a BA degree in arts & humanities from Hawaii Pacific University. When off the clock for USDT / Live-Aboards.com, she is an accomplished gourmet cook, specializing in Asian & Mediterranean dishes. Susan also has built & tended a large organic vegetable garden for 15 years, producing superb kale, Swiss chard, Korean garlic, tomatoes, potatoes, strawberries & exotic Asian hot peppers such as Thai minis, Bhut Jolokia "ghost peppers" from Assam (India), sweet-hot peppers from Nepal & classic crimson cayennes & jalapenos.
Her new ocean passion is paddle-boarding in the languid rolling waves of Oahu island, where John & Susan Hessburg brought their two sons nearly every summer of their lives for diving/hiking/surfing trips of up to 6 weeks each.
For 25 years, John & Susan Hessburg raised two sons -- Jack & Bo -- to be strong, creative independent young men, both of whom are working (part-time, seasonally) for U.S. DIVE TRAVEL & LIVE-ABOARDS.COM.

Oldest son L.J. HESSBURG, a computer engineering grad student who serves as on-call Computer Services Coordinator for Live-Aboards.com & U.S. Dive Travel, is well on his way towards a graduate degree in Computer Science / Software Engineering, with special interests in Artificial Intelligence & Aerospace Design. By the close of freshman/undergrad year, he'd finished all his Engineering req's for math & physics. Then as a sophomore, L.J. was hired as a teaching assistant for programming at a major U.S. college of engineering, where in his junior year he received a National Science Foundation grant for cutting-edge research into new stocastic computing disciplines. He recently completed an extended engineering internship with NASA, four years total, working on projects to support the Orion Manned Mission to Mars plus an advanced humanoid robot to be used at the International Space Station (ISS). L.J. was one of only a couple dozen undergrads selected from more than about 6,000 applicants nationwide for first -- a coveted NASA internship at Johnson Space Center in Houston. Then after 2 years he also won a 2-year-graduate internship at NASA, which he tackled concurrently with his Masters Degree research.
Of course, he is the code-smithing brawn behind this website, & was a force of nature during its creation. Preferring to free-dive, L.J. (aka Jack) has been on 21 adventure trips to Hawaii, & one to the Honduras Bay Islands with John. At nearly 6-foot-6, he looks like a hirsute barracuda when he dives, especially gliding out from under deep ledges...
Jack has rowed with his university crew team & plays lead alto sax with Jazz Ensemble One & the Jazz Combo at that same school. He loves paddle-boarding & boogie-board surfing with his Mom, Dad & brother on periodic trips to the Mid-Pacific or Caribbean. Jack also is a member of his university's rock climbing club, & has hiked with John & Susan in the Colorado Rockies -- including one 13,200 ft summit, & several lesser peaks.
L.J. Hessburg has formed his own pro jazz combos for years & plays regular gigs at downtown metro clubs, sometimes to SRO crowds of young folks, including one winter 2012 gig at the renowned club, Artist's Quarter, in St. Paul -- when he was only a high school junior. In his senior year at Apple Valley High School (MN), under the direction of jazz genius Dr. John Zimmerman, L.J. Hessburg led their Jazz Ensemble One to a first-place at the Eau Claire Jazz Festival, topping 60 stellar high school bands invited from the 5-state region. This was Dr. Z's magnum opus, the year before his retirement. He passed on in mid-summer of 2019 & is mourned by hundreds in jazz communities across the USA & seminal bossa nova tribes in Brazil.
For more than 8 years, Jack studied jazz sax with the nationally respected soloist & session artist Greg Keel, of MacPhail Center for Music in Minneapolis, MN. In his senior year at AVHS, L.J. Hessburg was given a national nod, the Louis Armstrong Jazz Award for outstanding solo & ensemble contributions to the jazz band there, within which he had won first chairs on the Minnesota All-State Jazz Ensemble both junior & senior years. Jazz educators & band leaders for many years called Jack one of the most talented young sax players in the Midwest USA. Here's a peek at one of his happiest moments, soloing with AVHS Jazz Ensemble 1 at the Eau Claire Jazz Festival (cue the vid clip at about 3:36 for best viewing) -- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Q_NzTAQFG0.

John & Susan's second son BO HESSBURG, recently completed two concurrent undergrad degrees -- in mathematics & computer science. He works off-&-on during summers & holidays as a Super Minnesota Gopher / office assistant for USDT / Live-Aboards.com. He too is an ocean lover, & enjoys free diving in Hawaii like his big brother. Bo also has other passions: for theater, jazz piano, chess & the Asian strategic board game of Go. Devastating in his patient attack modes, relentless & cunning in strategy, Bo Hessburg in only two years of play ascended 32 ranks to reach amateur master status -- Three-Dan in the mind-sport of Go. With a small handicap (1 stone of 150+ per player) he already has beaten many of the top masters (Five-Dan or higher) in Hawaii & Minnesota, where years ago he had reached the rank of 2-Dan. Bo ran cross-country & performed in several musicals for his high school.
Bo Hessburg was the first-chair piano player on Apple Valley High School's Jazz Ensemble One -- one of the top student jazz programs in the Midwest -- also under the brilliant direction of "Dr. Z." In his senior year there, Bo anchored the rhythm section of Jazz One at the Eau Claire Jazz Fest, where they placed 2nd out of nearly 100 top high schools in the Midwest, in April 2015. At AVHS he also won a National Merit Scholarship Commendation.
In the summer of 2013, BO HESSBURG also won a coveted scholarship with the Japan-America Friendship Association -- via Youth for Understanding USA -- & he spent 6 weeks in Nagoya Japan, studying at a private school & living with a local Japanese family. It was a full-tilt immersion experience & Bo now has strong skills in both written & spoken Japanese. Bo competed in the U.S. National Go Congress in August 2015, where some of the world's top players gathered for 9 days of mind-bending focus (& fun). He won most of his matches.
Bo also worked as a teaching assistant in the University of Minnesota's School of Engineering & Science, where he co-founded a new Go Club.
The Hessburgs say they all feel blessed, every day, to be working in a field where we can bring joy & refreshment to scores of new clients each year by helping them plan colorful tropical adventures all over the world, in sports that have always been the stuff of our own dreams.
